On NOT Going Insane

We have moved a lot. But that is pretty standard for young married/college students.

In Lincoln someone pointed out a fact about moving to me: YOU WILL BE DEPRESSED.

At the time I had never thought about it, but I instantly agreed. I never would have admitted it, but at some point- the isolation of your move hits you and you miss-- the past. Something, someone, someplace.

And sometimes it is hard to get over. It comes in waves. Sometimes you have to struggle and fight, work it like play dough till it finally feels right. But it will. Feel right,  that is. And this friend also said, you sort of have to "befriend" everyone till you get a comfort zone- then can start truly growing your friend circle.

Lincoln totally felt like that. It was just hard. I loved Lincoln, and hated it. It's a weird relationship to explain.

As the months went by and a I was molding myself to fit in, I read an article about 10 ways to not go insane as a stay at home mom. I don't remember all of them, and I certainly didn't keep them all. But it helped a lot. It helped me keep my sanity. And these things helped me each time we moved become more stable and happier (this last move was the best).

So here are the things that stuck out to me/helped me the best:

1. Go outside for at least 1 hr every day. Even in winter, in the snow and cold. Just get outside.

2. Call someone every day. Talk to someone outside your household world. Someone who cares, an adult. I gotta admit I stretched this one a lot- for a while calling the Dr counted. And ever now there will be days where I only do "errand " phone calls, but it's enough.

3. Plan. I am horrible at doing this- and even when I do do it I rarely stick to it. But it helps me calm down at least and feel like there is a purpose to the day.

4. Do something every day. Either plan a craft, bake, or have an outing- but do something out of the ordinary.

 And that's my advice :)

Hi.

Today Is Wednesday. We have been moved in for about 6 week- it has gone by way too fast, and I am finally getting around to say 'hello' once again! And here is a "what-you-missed-in-the-past-6-weeks" update: -Sariah likes to run around naked. At the YMCA. After she steals other peoples stuff. Little convict in training. -Seamus likes to step on leaves. Can you imagine 3 inch feet crunching leaves? Just imagine. It. Is. Adorable. -Sariah decided to 'help' the people are Papa Murphey's make their pizza. They were are Highschool girls and had no idea what to do and just stared at her and looked around awkwardly. - Pierre is kind of awesome. You just gotta see it to believe it. -They actually have a pretty good donut place here. But apparently the are shutting down. Live over. I guess Pierre just dropped a notch. -I think I can make up words. What in the world did my BA in English get me if not to be able to make up words?? The end.

Moving...

House is packed. Fridge is clean. We are all ready to move. Except for the fact that all the furniture is still lying around...buy hey, that is for another day. Sorry I said I was going to be more diligent about posting and be a regular blogger and all and then just stop. Moving kind of does weird things to your day. Like makes you stay of till midnight on consecutive bases packing and organizing all your stuff together. In other news I lost one follower. Apparently there were really upset at my non-comitence. ces la vie?

Oh, Hey...

I am joining in a blogger link-up that is [supposed] to be on Fridays. But I was feeling just a tad bit lazy last night to join up. So that brings us to Saturday. =]

Today.

The day I should be blogging a mushy gushy embarrassing post about my little girl and her big 3 birthday. And how I put her in time out the first thing in the morning for opening up all her gifts....ok, all buy two. But anyway....that is for another day.

1. We drove 90 miles to replace my phone [we got it through Best Buy, and the closest one is 90 miles away], only to find out that I will have to go back there AGAIN this week because "they don't keep phones in stock" and won't ship it to us. Something about insurance and third parties. Insurance and third parties should all jump in the Atlantic.

Safe to say, I am not the biggest fan on Best Buy tonight.

2. There is a stretch of road that connects the isolated Torrington, WY to the capitol city Cheyenne, WY. It is quite possibly the longest, and most tedious drive you may ever (not) experience. Except for about right now. When Sunflower fields can be seen on the occasion, and it is a beautiful sight.

3. We have about a week left in our current apartment. Time frames for our move keeps changing. It was going to be this past Thursday, then this past Wednesday, then Monday, then this coming Friday, then NEXT Friday...now we are at this coming Friday again. I hope it stays. Now for some serious packing.

4. I have decorated my second and third cake this week. I think I need some more practice.

5. Today I got to enjoy a "time out" at chic-fil-a all by myself. Sweet, sweet moments devouring a bag with too much sauce. Oh, it was glorious.

Oh hey, Friday!

In case you haven't noticed, I am getting back into this whole blogging thing.
I want to write. So I need a name. I need to get out there and contribute. And this is my first step.

So, I am joining in a link up.

Five things. Five things about anything.

1. We are moving in (hopefully) a week. Maybe I will talk more about this once it has all happened, but right now, it still seem's surreal. We are at that point where about living in our apartment for 5 months, we were in a routine. Things were put where they belonged. And now it's like a sword fight went on through our small apartment. Somehow. One day, our place was clean. Then you start THINKING about packing, and the next thing you know, the place is as good as gone.

2. I was going to make beans for dinner. I had them all sorted and rinsed, and was waiting for the water to boil when Seamus woke up from his nap. I went to check on him, and when I came back, Sariah had decided to help. By pouring the entire bowl in the sink.
I didn't really care about not having beans for dinner, but we don't have a garbage disposal. So i had to pick all those beans out so they wouldn't clog the drain. Talk about tedious.

3. My kid's birthday's are next week. My little dude turns ONE. And Sariah? In a week, she will be THREE. Luckily for us, they are too young to care about birthday parties. Because moving + birthdays don't go well together.

4. I call Seamus little dude. Or dude. Sariah is little girl. Seamus responds equally to Seamus, Shea (or Shay, or Sea, we have not decided on spelling yet), and dude.

5. Today I had a "time out". Really, Sariah was in time out, Seamus was asleep- and I ate the last piece of cheesecake. It was good. It was also from a box. No bake. Joe doesn't care for cheesecake (so he says), so I bought this one day thinking I would make it one time when he was away on a trip when I needed a quick pick-me-up. Finally made it. He decided he likes "this cheesecake".  Let me tell you, this has happened too many times before. He doesn't like pistachios till I get a big bag for free. Then they are his best friend.
My only regret was that there was not another last piece for after lunch.

Living 'rural'

Via

I never imagined that I would live anywhere other than California. More specifically, the Central Coast. That little piece of Heaven that isn't quite Southern, but not Northern California. Those who have heard of the place revel in its magnificence. I cherish it as the place I only ever knew as home for the first 21 years of my life.
Once we got married, Joe promised to take my back home (to live).  It is where our families are still at, and so we have known it is always the place we want to go back to.

I have no idea where my kids will end up calling home, but out of all the moving we have done- California, Idaho, Nebraska, South Dakota (soon), I have realized something. While I haven't been a 'world traveler' I am so GLAD I have gotten to know my own backyard.

We hated Nebraska when we moved here. Heck, looking back, I still don't think I would necessarily want to move back to Lincoln. It was the biggest city we had ever lived in, and while that had some huge benefits (Trader Joes, 4 Targets, 2 actually malls, Childrens Museum and zoo, etc), I have come to love our small town we now live in.

via
Now, I wouldn't even call us rural. We live less than 20 minutes from a movie theatre, Walmart, target, and there are TWO gas stations in our town.
In fact, I would almost call the town that we are moving to in SD more rural (current town = 978, new town =13,000), because it will be the biggest town for 4 hours. That is pretty 'rural'.

Its exciting.
Its conservative.
Its old and that makes it new.
Its friendly.

The start of something new

I am currently sitting in probably the #1 "cool kid" spot in all of Scotsbluff. That's right, The Home Depot. Which is right next to the Walmart. So of course I am sure ALL the cool kids come here with their trucks on Friday night and just chill. Because I don't really think there is anything better to do...

In all honesty, the move was a lot worse than our new location. I never thought I would be happy to move back into an apartment again- but oh, it is actually kind if lame cleaning out a place that was brand new when you moved in. Expectations are HIGH. Plus, it's hard work cleaning a big place, all on your own, with a toddler and a baby. When we moved in we had just about nothing. A glider, a crib, a washing machine and a few boxs of clothes was about it. In 18 months we have more than tripled what we moved in with.
So our new place, being smaller AND older- while seems disappointing at first, holds a lot of appeal to me right now. Especially when we hope to not be here for too long.

Joe has been in our new residence for over a week now. He left last Thursday and made a slow trip (LOTS of wind) and made it late that night, and had members from our new church congregation help us move in Friday night.
I stayed and worked, and frantically cleaned and said goodbye Th-Sat andeft early Sat morning (ok, so like 8....).  I did have help cleaning- the missionaries at or church helped me clean for about 4 hours and friends watched the kids for another 6- SO extemely helpful.
Friday night I had a "going away party" with some of my co-workers. It was a lot of fun and put both kids to sleep!

The drive out for us went fairly smooth- it only took about an hour longer to get here than it should have, but I count that as a success with two kids by myself!

Like I said- our new apartment is old. 5 different types of carpet, 3 types of tile, a tiny toilet, and stray cats everywhere...well in the town, not in the apartment. But I am oddly content with it. The village we live in has about 974 (978) people, has a cranky librarian, 3 places to eat (including a Subway), a gas station, a little grocery market, a post office, hardware store, a tavern and consignment store along with 2 parks and a pool. Our place is about a block from the train tracks that bring a train through about 10-12 times a day. Sariah loves it.

We really like our new ward (congregation) and feel welcomed and excited for the time we will spend here. Other than the horrible wind from Whyomming (we are about 15 miles from the border).

And that's that!

Growing up, or getting older?

I believe that one thing that greatly signifies us of getting older, is one simple question.

"Where do you live?"
So simple, right? Yet suddenly I feel bombarded by this question. And I realized it has slowly progressed and become more important, and I see no end in sight.

It starts with childhood, when you are on vacation and meet another kid at the pool- and your questions pretty much consist of "Whats your favorite color, animal, food, and movie." Maybe your name.
Then as you get older, you start asking the more serious questions. Like, "Who do you have for homeroom?"
In college, you ask WHERE you came form. Then, all the sudden, you get married. But it doesn't happen just then- it still takes some time. A kid, a change of scenery, maybe a nice car or something. Then all the sudden you walk into a new setting, church or something- and after the "are you knew? What are you here for? What are you doing?"--Not even a name, it comes. Like a heavy bag of rotten apples, "Where do you live". (Note: If you are ever asked this by a random passerby on the street, DO NOT ANSWER.)

Not that this is a bad thing, it just, is life. Getting older, maybe growing up. I can't decide which.
I just saw something on facebook today that said, "Getting older is necessary. Growing up is optional", I think- or something like that.

Suddenly, I realized- that now, wherever we move, I will be marked by where I live. It is a bit saddening, I suppose, as we fight already to keep our identity without the worlds influence, now we must mask our home's as well.

But it is life.
And I shall continue on.
