Living 'rural'

Via

I never imagined that I would live anywhere other than California. More specifically, the Central Coast. That little piece of Heaven that isn't quite Southern, but not Northern California. Those who have heard of the place revel in its magnificence. I cherish it as the place I only ever knew as home for the first 21 years of my life.
Once we got married, Joe promised to take my back home (to live).  It is where our families are still at, and so we have known it is always the place we want to go back to.

I have no idea where my kids will end up calling home, but out of all the moving we have done- California, Idaho, Nebraska, South Dakota (soon), I have realized something. While I haven't been a 'world traveler' I am so GLAD I have gotten to know my own backyard.

We hated Nebraska when we moved here. Heck, looking back, I still don't think I would necessarily want to move back to Lincoln. It was the biggest city we had ever lived in, and while that had some huge benefits (Trader Joes, 4 Targets, 2 actually malls, Childrens Museum and zoo, etc), I have come to love our small town we now live in.

via
Now, I wouldn't even call us rural. We live less than 20 minutes from a movie theatre, Walmart, target, and there are TWO gas stations in our town.
In fact, I would almost call the town that we are moving to in SD more rural (current town = 978, new town =13,000), because it will be the biggest town for 4 hours. That is pretty 'rural'.

Its exciting.
Its conservative.
Its old and that makes it new.
Its friendly.

I forgot my birthday?

Not really.
But I didn't blog.
Because my computer sorta died on me...happy birthday, right? Anyways, I am sorta stuck with phone blogging till we figure out my computer.
I mean, we DO have another perfectly good working computer at home- but, it's a PC. And a desktop. You understand my dilemma, right? I can't seem to explain it to Joe.

Anyways. I had a realization yesterday.
For the last 4-5 years I have thought getting older sucked because birthdays army as fun.
Then it hit me- those birthdays were all in the cold. Growing up I never thought of having a winter birthday. The weather never affected my birthday. I mean we weren't going to the beach, but I do remember one yer having a water balloon fight.
So, fast forward to life in Idaho/Nebraska.
No sun.
Wind.
Cold.
Snow everywhere.

There is not a chance you wanna go celebrate outside.
So, now I have to live with a winter birthday. :/

On the bright side- I got Chinese food on my birthday. And that makes EVERYTHING better :)

Why I love California

We all love our hometown state/city/whatever for different and specific reasons.

I know California has problems.
I know it is expensive.
I know it is over crowded.
But I love that place.

I love it because I can get quality, fresh produce all year long.
I love it because in a day I can go to the beach, dessert and mountains.
I love it because it has so much history to teach my family about. The missions, ghost towns, ocean, national and state parks.
I love it because the weather is fantastic and I do not like living in the snow.
I love it because there is so much to do.
I love it for its oceans, good food, and it i where my family is.

Thanks for being so good to us California.

Now, how do I get everyone else to leave so I can have more alone time with my state?

A Mom bears' gotta do, what a Mom bears' gotta do.

It was a long day.
It had been a long weekend, full of driving and being in the car.
Sariah was not a happy camper.

Let me explain.

My parents, Sariah and I went down to Palm Springs area this last weekend to visit some family. We drove all day Friday, spent Saturday shopping, and left Sunday morning. We had left the desert early that morning, had a stop for breakfast and gas- and had that little girl knocked out within an hour of our drive. But, of course, she woke up two hours later- us being just shy of reaching LA.
By the way, this was NOT good. We still live a good 3 hours North of LA. And Sariah had already taken her nap. So, onward we fought with the cranky toddler- making stops along the way to please her.

When we finally reached Santa Barbara, the once beautiful day we had been greeted with, left us and we were left with a rather dreary-looking sky. (NOTE: This is the central coast of California we are talking about, so it was still in the 50's in early February). I had been promised a lunch of Panda Express, and I was excited. I LOVE Panda, Sariah does to, and she needed a break from that car.

Via
Only thing was, when we entered Panda Express, it was PACKED. (another NOTE: Panda Express's never have much seating, and this one is particularly small- with 8 small tables and 4 bar stools). There was a long line, and as we waited in line, we contemplated the idea of eating outside. In the not so pleasant weather. I was not too excited. The idea of fighting against the wind while eating, trying to keep a toddler focused on her food, and having a good time before the last hour of our journey was important to me. Sariah needed to eat inside.
So, we kept our eyes out. But the group in front of us apparently had about 20 people with them and were commandeering every table that came up (I feel proud using that word). Finally as we were paying, a group of 4 were leaving. My dad left us to go take their table- and waited polietly for them to leave. It was clear he was waiting for them. Then, out of no where, these two grubby little kids came and hugged the chairs- as if to claim OUR table. My dad was about to give up. Thus putting us without a place to eat.
I WOULD NOT HAVE IT.
I just said, "No, this is ridiculous." and marched over with Sariah, and sat down in a chair at the table. One kid looked at me and my dad, and my dad only said, "I am sorry- but we were in line first." (NOTE: They had JUST gotten in line. Their mom hadn't even ordered food yet.) And then they walked away upset saying, "But it was OUR table!"
Correction.
It was ours.
You stole it.
I sat in it first.

My mom came over and asked what had happened, and mentioned she thought there was going to be a shoot out at Panda. I very happily sat and ate with a happy Sariah, who was then able to enjoy the last leg of our journey.

And, because I am sure you all think I am a horrible person at this point- the little kids got a table right next to us about a minute or less later. But we certainly would have missed it.
I know it may be ridiculous, and I NEVER would have done that if it was just me- I would have been fine with eating in the car. But I was not going to do that to Sariah.

Don't mess with a momma bear.

February: A love Affair

So, sorry I have been so MIA lately.
I flew home for a few weeks to California, which in itself is a distraction from blog land, but then the day we landed Sariah got sick. And has basically been sick for the whole first week we were here. Plus, we left CA when she was 11 months old. So, basically 6 months away and she remembers nobody- meaning lots of fussiness, me holding her, and not so much fun all around.

So, overall, I have been going to bed early (plus I got sick), and have been leaving blog land alone.
So, sorry. I am back.

Now, February. I know that this is a forgotten month. Other than the LOVE day, people don't care much.
BUT THEY SHOULD!
Oh, you should, you ALL should.
Because honestly, this month ROCKS and blows all your other months OUT OF THE CALENDAR!!!
I mean, look at a calendar. Is there ANY other month that has SO MANY holidays? Sure, half of them may be in other countries- but that is just because the WHOLE world realizes this months significance!

Ground Hogs day (and for those of us that live anywhere cold, this is IMPORTANT)
Valentines Day
Ash Wednesday (No, I am not catholic- but I was born on Ash Wednesday, and it holds importance because of this).
Numerous Presidents birthdays/Holidays
The occasional extra day
Shortest month of the year
and....
MY BIRTHDAY!!!

I mean, come on, this month rocks. Plus, in school (other than college) you basically had every Monday in February off due to some holiday. Plus because it is shorter (less is more, y'know), it goes by WAY fast, which is all fantastic for me, because my birthday is at the end of the month!

So, the way I see it, February is a win-win for everyone. (Clearly, I may be a little bit biased, and if your birthday does not fall in this month you may not agree. But still, you should).

So, you all should LOVE February.

LIFE

Because, I haven't written lately and should say SOMETHING.

1. This song makes Sariah dance. It is ADORABLE.
(Also, sadly, she doesn't care for ABBA. The Beetles & Johnny Cash are a go though, along with others).

2. I am in California.
It is glorious. I came home and "surprised" my mom (who basically already knew I was coming, but not totally. It was more of a surprise to her to find out I would be here for a month.) It is so green. And warm. And not very toddler- proof, which is providing for me walking around a lot of following Sariah like a hawk.

SO gosh darn beautiful. Oh, and flying in? And seeing that AMAZING Ocean and costal line, with green hills? I swear- we haven't seen this green color since July.

3. I get to take Sariah to my favorite park tomorrow. I swear, this park to me was like a castle when I was little. I am excited. I just hope she feels well enough tomorrow to TRULY enjoy it.

Orange you going to say banana?

When you really come down to it, the thing is, I don't like fall.
As simple as that.
I am astounded at the overwhelming amount of blogs, Facebook status's, cute pictures and pin's I am seeing on the web about peoples overwhelming love for the season I deem as the "Monday of seasons" or "Armpit of the seasons".

I was thinking about why I do not like this season, and really, it makes a lot of sense.

1. I was born and raised here

Doesn't make sense? Well, this is the central coast of California. A place where we boast of our perfect 70 degree weather all year long. Where the winters are short and the summers and longer. Its perfection. Seasons rarely exist. So I am not one to favor a change in temperature, let alone the constant varying in degrees that fall inevitably brings- one day it will be cold, the next warm, then rainy. But growing up, I could depend on the weather to be "nice".

2. Fall is the Monday of seasons.
Fall is really like Monday. It means school is back in session. It means colder weather, an end to summer festivities like beaches, and endless days of sunlight and playing. It is the season you have to get through to get to Winter (which I love because 1-Christmas, and 2-my birthday. Along with the fact that there are LOTS more Holidays), then you deal with Spring, then, joy abounds with SUMMER once again, the true weekend of the seasons.

3. Leaves.
Growing up we had two LARGE trees in our front yard. In california, at least where I lived, leaves din't turn pretty colors. They went from green- to on the ground dead. And being the youngest that I was, had to rake them up. What seemed like every day. So, my memory of leaves and the relationship that we have ends at raking.

4. Clothes.
I hate the idea of layering on and off clothes just to enter buildings and go outside. The only good things Scarves do is protect me from potential vampire threats. And Gloves are just hard to function in.

5. Pumpkins.
I am not a pumpkin fan. Honestly, for as much as people "CLAIM" to love chocolate- they always seem to opt out for Pumpkin pie instead of Chocolate when it is offered. I, on the other hand, will stay a true fan.

6. Halloween.
Ya, just not my thing. As a kid it was fun- but now I just find it pointless. And black? Totally not my color. I am a bright and cheery sort of gal and choose YELLOW anytime.

7. Soup & Hot drinks
I LOVE THIS. But I do NOT understand why people classify them as "Fall foods" and not "Winter foods".

So, there you have it.
I am a rebel.
I am the devils advocate.
I am different.
And I like it.

I mean, don't get me wrong- Fall can have some perks.
Like, growing up we went every year to Avila Barn area to get apples and apple cider. I LOVED that.
And I love the smells and scents that come out in candles and such (But more so because they signify the Holiday season, not Fall).
I love the idea of decorating and crafting- so I will still do that. I just don't look FORWARD to it. I look forward to Winter, and Summer. And that is that.

Things I miss about California

1. Family
2. Beach/Ocean (Specifically Avilla, Port SLO, dog beaches, Jalama)
3. Farmers markets everywhere, fruit stands (with good fruit- and not just veggies).
4. Open space (yes- I am in Nebraska and saying I miss the open-ness of California).
5. Perfect weather (no humidity-which of course only comes at night as we walk gone up-hill from the dog park).
6. Not so many bugs.
7. Cities that are not afraid of highways/freeways cutting through their town.
8. People who work a little faster...
9. Familiar stores (No albertsons, Von's, Carls Jr out here!)

And my #1 thing (or #10 I guess) is:
I miss being able to figure out where I am and which way is North. (I look around- but Nebraska has NO landmark distinguishes! It sucks when people tell you, "I live two blocks North of Holdredge" when you have no mountains pointing you North or ocean showing you west. And that sun doesn't always help so much!)

A day at the park

Nebraska is unique in a few ways.
1. Kool-aid was invented here. (Side note: I LOVE Kool-aid. There was always a pitcher in the fridge growing up, I remember making an emergency trip to the store when we ran out, and although it calls for a cup of sugar- it really should have probably 1 1/2. =] )
2. Arbor day was created here. (You though Nebraksa was flat? Well yes, it is. But to make up for that, they planted TREES!)
3. Well, I am sure there is more...but I just wanted to highlight on those things.

Also, Kool-aid really has no place in this post other then it is REALLY cool I am in the state where my favorite drink was made. =]

So, Lincoln is also unique in a few ways.
1. One of the mayors/cities goals is to have a park within a mile of every person in the city of Lincoln. That makes for a LOT of parks. I think I remember hearing that there are about 123 parks. Ya. A LOT. I may be off, but honestly- Lincoln has no shortage of parks.
2. Lincoln drains all their water (pools, fountains, etc) when school starts.
3. Lincoln is in a drought.
4. Lincoln decided to have its freeways to surround the city.
5. They have a giant system of walking/bike paths that go throughout the city.

So, I am sort of making it a goal to go to every park before we leave. A challenge I am ready and excited to accept. So far, I have been to...5. (I really don't even feel like I can count it as 5 either. 2 are dog parks. One I just walked through.)

I have made a friend with a lady who is also from Ca, we have a common friend- and her husband is out here getting his PhD, so we have hung out and explored parks together.

Today we went to Trega park, which normally has a 'splash park' but due to reasons listed above, it is only on during the weekend till next weekend! But, it was still a really cool park. Part of the bike/walking paths go through the park, and it is just a long park with some of the coolest play things I have ever seen.
It honestly made me want to be a kid with no worries of falling, because when I did try to climb it- I freaked out.

But, Sariah had fun. =] So it was a win.
